Help your Homeschooler Love to Read

Posted by Diane Noble on June 28, 2008
by Diane Noble

Reading skills are an important part of any homeschooling curriculum. This is because people use reading skills not just in English class, but in all subjects. Even when we study history or science, we need good reading skills to comprehend and digest the information. Homeschooling parents need not confine reading lessons to English class. In fact, you can incorporate reading lessons into every subject area. It`s also very important to encourage children to read beyond what is required in their curriculum. Developing reading as a habit will do wonders for your child`s success in many areas of their studies.

Homeschooling parents enjoy the advantage of flexibility. They are not limited by rigid curriculum, study hours, text books or any of the many limitation public school children must stick by. This helps homeschooled children fulfill their potentials as readers. Statistics show that homeschooled children often perform better on standardized reading tests than public school children. Homeschooling allows parents to incorporate reading into everyday routines. For example, you can read to your child before bed or have them read to you and that can be a part of their reading lesson for the day. Homeschooling don`t have to confine reading lessons to study hours.

Reading as a habit is not only important for developing reading skills, but also for improving vocabulary and writing skills and establishing a child`s knowledge base. Encourage your child to read a wide range of material. Fictional stories are great for a child`s imagination, while non-fiction is important for accumulating important facts and information. Try to have your child read both fiction and non-fiction from an early age in order to develop this into a life long habit.

An easy way to encourage your child to read during free time is to make a wide range of reading material available around the house where kids can see it and reach it easily. You should never force your child to read or make reading feel like a chore or punishment. In fact reading should be viewed as a pleasure and a treat. Modeling good behavior is one of the best ways for parents to instill a trait in their children. Therefore, make sure your child catches you reading once in a while. That will definitely encourage them to pick up a book for themselves.

Every education should be well rounded of course, but reading is a building block from which other education follows. When homeschooling your child, encourage him or her to read from a young age. Reading skills take a long time to develop but they are crucial for your child`s success no matter which path they choose in life.

Potty Training Advice

Posted by Paul J James on June 26, 2008
by Paul J James

There is no shortage of potty training advice available to parents going through the process. Like all advice, though, parents need to filter what they hear through their own parenting beliefs and methods. Keeping a few fundamentals in mind makes this much easier. Be Patient

Any advice that suggests parents “force” their child to potty train faster should be discarded. A child becomes potty trained in his own time according to his own physical and neurological development. Just like walking and talking, potty training requires a certain level of development

Be Consistent

This is half the battle. A child learns through repetition. If his potty training program is the same from day to day, he learns what to expect and becomes more secure. That’s not to say you can’t add a little incentive now and then, but don’t change the entire process overnight and expect him to adapt.

The best way to ensure consistency is by having the plan well thought out before beginning and making sure others who may help your child with potty training are informed. It’s important that the same process be used at all times. Beware of any advice that would require drastic changes to his routine.

Be Informed

The more you understand about how a child becomes potty trained, the easier it will be for you to meet and address any obstacles you may encounter. There are many good parenting books available that address this issue. This also makes it much easier to recognize good advice when you hear it.

Most potty training advice is given with the best of intentions. Being able to sort and sift through it to find things that will work well for you can strengthen your potty training program and make the process more enjoyable for everyone.

How to Get Pregnant – Get These 5 Affected Factors Now

Posted by Eddy K Elgin on June 23, 2008
by Esther Ledger

More and more young, healthy married couples are thinking of having a baby since most of them have been married over a year. With such strong and healthy bodies, the thought of female infertility has not crosses their minds until their doctor confirmed the diagnosis.

Since, most of the lab’s confirmed that the problem lies with the female and not the male, this fact on female infertility may seem like a sharp blow on them as their doctor explained. With that, it is not the end of their planned chapter on parenthood; but a new chapter.

Many of the causes of female infertility are treatable. You and your partner may also consider other options, such as adoption or foster care of children. In fact the issues involved with female infertility are far more complex than male infertility. After discovering that it is a female infertility issues, he or she may take a detailed study of the medical and family history to find out if there were any other symptoms. Symptoms he found were:

Not regular menstrual cycle

There are few women experiencing a full 28-day cycle; with many of their periods only once a couple of months. Any menstrual cycle less than the 24-day cycle or more than 35-day is considered not regular.

The female ovulation is not regular each month

One can prevent female infertility by calculating when she ovulates, since there is a 24-hour window period where she is most fertile. As some say that if the menstrual cycle is regular, the woman must be ovulating, but this is incorrect as not all women ovulate every cycle.

Family History

From your family tree, you may found out that your mom had trouble conceiving you; this may give you a higher chance of female infertility.

How old are you plays an important role in infertility?

So long women have quality eggs in them; it makes no difference whether their age is early 30s to mid-40s. However, when they are mid-30s, the number of eggs they produces each cycle will decline. This will prevent pregnancy as compared to a woman in her early 20s.

Is it often that stress is causing infertility?

The question of why is this happening to me cause lots of couples to undergo stress and emotional pressures trying to get themselves pregnant. We should not take things for granted, thinking that it is easy to have babies. What we have planned so far may not turn out well. Mentally preparation is often the best bet to fight infertility.

Before you starting punishing yourself by asking those self-blame questions, think of the fact that infertility is the end of parenthood. Current medical science is some advanced that there many be more and more miracle babies being born everyday.

Paternity Testing Information

Posted by Jane Bear on June 20, 2008
by Jane Bear

Performing a paternity test is the best way to find out for sure if a man is the true biological father of a child. The most frequent reasons paternity becomes an issue are divorce, child custody and child support court cases. However, it can also arise if a man questions the woman’s fidelity.

Paternity testing is done by DNA paternity test analysis of the three individuals, although older methods have included ABO blood group typing, analysis of various other proteins and enzymes, or using HLA antigens. Prenatal paternity testing, viability test, and in-home testing are the test options available in undergoing a paternity test.

In prenatal paternity testing, a physician or gynecologist needs to be involved to do an amniocentesis or CVS (chronic villi sampling) in order to collect a sample for testing. If you choose prenatal paternity testing you should discuss this with your doctor to make sure that it is the best thing for you and the baby and that you are in no way endangering the child.

In cases where the father is missing, a viability test can help determine the paternity. The viability test involves testing material like preserved samples of hair or other body tissues.

If you simply want to know “discretely” who the father of a child is, then a home-conducted paternity test is for you. Do-it-yourself kits use the buccal swab to get the needed material, this swab placed into the mouth and performing a quick swipe of the inside of the cheek. Once the samples have been taken, they are sent to a lab for testing. The DNA material that was collected from the man in question as well as from the baby is then processed in the lab for possible matches. However, it must be kept in mind that the result derived from this process is not admissible in court.

It is possible to undergo a world of different types of DNA paternity testing, whether for personal or legal circumstances. People who do it for personal reasons usually wouldn’t want other people to know about it. Legal paternity tests can be used to settle adoption issues and settle child-support disputes.

There are two possible result scenarios after taking a paternity test. First would be exclusion, which means that the man is proven not to be the biological father of the child. The second scenario would be inclusion, which means that the man is the biological father of the child.

Many lives have been forever changed with paternity testing. So, it is very important that you fully anticipate all potential outcomes before the paternity testing is conducted. The Internet is a great place to purchase a home DNA paternity testing kit.

The Truth About Paternity Testing

Performing a paternity test is the best way to find out for sure if a man is the true biological father of a child. The most frequent reasons paternity becomes an issue are divorce, child custody and child support court cases. However, it can also arise if a man questions the woman’s fidelity.

Paternity testing is done by DNA paternity test analysis of the three individuals, although older methods have included ABO blood group typing, analysis of various other proteins and enzymes, or using HLA antigens. Prenatal paternity testing, viability test, and in-home testing are the test options available in undergoing a paternity test.

Mothers who undergo prenatal paternity testing wish to determine the paternity even before the baby is born. You can choose amniocentesis or CVS (chronic villi sampling). Concerns that arise when having the amniocentesis are the risk of aborting the fetus, injury to the fetus and other risks. So, if you decide to go for a prenatal paternity test, it is best to discuss it with your physician or gynecologist beforehand to ensure that you are not in danger.

In a viability test, preserved samples like hair, body tissues, and blood are being used. This test is commonly used in cases when the alleged father is not present or cannot be found.

Paternity testing can now be conducted from the privacy of your own home. In this test, the DNA is collected using the buccal swab, which resembles to the common cotton-tipped swab but has a special component known as the “Dacron.” The swab is then rubbed against the interior of the individual’s cheek, several loose cheek cells stick to the swab. The DNA collected will be brought to the laboratory for some series of tests. It is very important that the DNA samples must be in sealed and tamper-evident packing.

A paternity test can be conducted for either personal or legal purposes. For personal paternity tests, the people involved can do the collection of samples themselves and simply send the DNA samples to the paternity test lab for processing. On the other hand, legal paternity tests require a detailed documentation to be admissible in court.

There are only two possible outcomes after taking a paternity test. If the man’s DNA types do not match the child’s DNA, then he is excluded as the biological father. However, if the DNA types match, then the man is not excluded as the father.

Being identified as the father of a child can have serious and long lasting effects on the life of a man. So, it is important to weigh all of the potential outcomes of paternity testing before you decide to have it conducted. You can purchase a paternity testing kit online delivered safely and securely right to your front door for privacy.

Homeschooling the Charlotte Mason Way

Posted by Diane Noble on June 20, 2008
by Diane Noble

Homeschooling used to consist of four or five children sitting around a table scribbling away in a pile of workbooks, while a stern parent stood over them and lectured. With the help of innovative teachers like Charlotte Mason, homeschooling has come a long way. Today, there are many different methods of homeschooling. The Charlotte Mason method has become quite popular with homeschooling parents today. If you’re thinking about homeschooling, you should definitely consider the different practices out there and see which will suit your children and family best. In this article, I will introduce you to Charlotte Mason method of homeschooling.

More and more parents today and choosing the Charlotte Mason method to homeschool their children. Charlotte Mason founded the homeschooling movement in the early 1900’s (1842-1923). Her enthusiasm and commitment to the education of children paved the way for a comprehensive and adaptable program. The foundation of the Charlotte Mason method of homeschooling is a focus on core subjects with an emphasis on classical music, fine arts and literature. Charlotte Mason dedicated her life to creating an effective educational program that would engage children and provide them with quality and lasting educational experiences.

Mason incorporates what she called ‘Living Books’ into the program, in place of dry factual textbooks often found in public schools. ‘Living Books’ are held in high value for Mason. Living books should be written by persons with passion for a particular subject. Also, the books should be written in conversational or narrative style. Books must be ‘alive’ and engaging in order to inspire a similar enthusiasm in the child. Mason shuns ‘twaddle,’ which are books or information that are dumbed down for children, insulting their intelligence and squashing their enthusiasm.

An important part of Mason’s program includes reading literature and narrating. Children must become proficient at narrating in their own words what they have read. The narration can be oral, written or even expressed in drawings. Narrating after reading helps to ensure comprehension. Younger children can narrate orally or through drawings but by ten years old, the child should be able to narrate a story by writing. Narration ensures that the child has synthesized the reading, organized the information in their mind and determined how best to communicate this information.

Charlotte Mason believes that children should spend a large amount of time outdoors to help them develop a relationship with nature and a love for the environement. After observing nature, children should write in nature diaries everything they perceive about nature. Nature dairies can also be used to draw pictures of or write poetry about nature. One of the objectives of this nature study is to lead the way for meaningful instruction of scientific subjects. Homeschooling parents who want to implement some of the Charlotte Mason philosophy, should get their children started on nature dairies and ensure that their children get plenty of opportunities to spend time outdoors and develop a love and appreciation for nature.

Mason held strongly to her belief that the development of good character and behavior was essential to the complete development of a child’s personality. Children must learn how to govern and discipline themselves. Mason encouraged parents and teachers to instill good habit such as respect, punctuality, cleanliness and patience in their children. Children should spend four to six weeks working on a new trait or skill until it becomes a habit. These are the cornerstones of the Charlotte Mason method. Homeschooling parents can find many ways to incorporate these practices into their homeschooling routines.

Parenting Tips

Posted by Jane Bear on June 19, 2008
by Jane Bear

Being a parent is one of the toughest jobs anyone may ever have. It is an ongoing process that teaches parents new things each day and leaves much more that needs to be learned before they become a good parent. There are various styles of parents, and each of them has it’s own style and characteristics. Basically, there are four styles of parenting namely: authoritarian, permissive, authoritative (also known as egalitarian), and uninvolved.

The authoritarian parenting style is high in structural boundaries and somewhat strict like the military in its execution. The parent’s responsiveness to their children is usually low to very low, rules are laid down and must be followed. In some cases, punishment meted out would be seen in today’s society as extremely, and unnecessarily heavy-handed.

The second parenting style is the indulgent or permissive parent. Permissive or indulgent parents are generally lenient. They allow a variety of behaviors by their children that some would even describe as immature. Essentially, they let their children look after themselves and they avoid confronting them at all costs.

In the authoritative parent style, the parent is still the parent, not the best friend. However, authoritative parents are very concerned with what their children need and provide them with opportunities for success. Parents practicing this parenting style focus mostly on keeping their children safe, while allowing them exploration to discover life and to make mistakes while the consequences are small.

In uninvolved parents, as the name suggests, parents are simply uninvolved. Parents are neither demanding nor responsive of their children and they are not interested in any feedback from them, they are the most likely to be irresponsible and more often neglect their children.

There are some basic rules when it comes to good parenting. These are the importance of proper communication, being a good role model, and being kind to your children. Keeping lines of communication open is very essential in parenting. Real model parenting means being a parent model, living the way you want your children to live. A child must be able to come and share his or her troubles and problems with their parents without hesitation. You should not do anything to your child that you wouldn’t want your child to do to you; there are far better ways for you to handle conflict, stress and common misbehaviors.

In relation to parental controls, children nowadays spend a great deal of their childhood playing on the computer and surfing the web and this can be a great source of frustration for many parents. Parents initially welcomed the Internet into their homes, believing it would provide their children with access to a bottomless pit of beneficial and educational information. However, many parents soon realized that their kids were spending hours surfing inappropriate and undesirable websites. Henceforth, when trying to establish the right balance, it is necessary to take some kind of parental controls over your child’s computer and Internet use.

Parenting is not about providing well, giving pocket money, or satisfying the material needs of your children. It is about creating love, understanding, trust and bonds that will last a lifetime of good times and bad.

Options In Child Bike Safety Explained

Posted by Chris Channing on June 15, 2008
by Chris Channing

Not every child has gone through the stage where they just can’t seem to stay away from harm and danger. But when the stage in their life comes to find out how to ride a bike, parents can be reassured that the possibility of being injured is great for their children. To help keep things safe and fun, a few options are available for investigation.

The youngest of children will most likely have to be put in special bike seats. The leader in the industry of bike seats in this case is normally the “Weeride” line of products, although there are some intriguing competitors. Regardless, Weeride products allow for children to be put into a safety seat and harness so that the adult can provide an invigorating ride.

The common baby seat is placed in the back, although this is a major safety risk. Adults will appreciate the front riding seats that products such as Weeride provides. After all, a crash or other accident will leave a back seat strewn about, without the aid of the adult. But when riding right next to the adult’s arms, smaller children are much more protected as a result.

For tikes that are too old to sit in a baby seat, there is another option that allows for the same experience without the dangers. This option comes via the co-pilot bike. This model of Weeride products allows for a smaller bike to be in junction with a larger bike. It allows for the child to pedal just like the adult would, but the child can’t turn as it is attached to the back of the adult’s bike.

Still older kids will also be able to benefit from increased safety through the Weeride product known as the “EZ Trainer.” This product allows an adult to control the child’s bike via an elongated stick-like device. This can be done without the training wheels that most kids learn off of, and gives children the feeling of actually riding the bike- unlike the feeling that training wheels produce.

Lastly, most consumers will have questions as to which products fit which bikes. The good news is that most Weeride products do indeed fit the majority of bikes- depending on the product. Some products such as the “EZ Trainer” will even fit all standard bikes, with very few exceptions. Other products allow for maximum interchangeability, meaning that investing in such a product won’t turn into a poor investment as a result of not being able to use it.

Closing Comments

There is much cause to celebrate with the addition of a Weeride product in a family’s household. After all, the gift of enjoying a fun bike ride is priceless. Allowing children to experience the joys that adults can is rewarding- and doubly so thanks to safety equipment and technology that minimizes the risk of injury that comes as a result of such activities.

How to control Panic Attacks in pregnancy.

Posted by Millicent Feraux on June 11, 2008
by Millicent Feraux

When women are pregnant, they often find themselves not only dealing with their pregnancy but also with anxiety and panic. There is a reason for this happening.

While pregnant, the woman’s body is full of hormones in overdrive. Sometimes the changes in hormones trigger the anxiety and panic attacks to occur. Remember every part of the mother’s body is affected by pregnancy.

Pregnancy is a naturally stressful time for many women, particularly where the pregnancy is unexpected or unplanned, or where there are health concerns surrounding the pregnancy. When combined with these hormonal changes, pregnancy becomes a common time for panic and worry.

When I was pregnant, I seemed to be most worried about what was going to happen during the birth process and I was also worried about being a good mother. I was lucky as my extra anxiety and panic was considered by my doctor as being normal.

But for some women, anxiety and panic can be a problem especially in the third trimester which is the last 3 months of pregnancy. You might find it interesting to know that some women prone to anxiety and panic find these feelings actually go away during pregnancy. This shows a direct connection between hormone changes and anxiety and panic.

What can you do if you experience anxiety and panic attacks while pregnant? Pharmaceutical options may harm your child or interfere with the natural rhythmn of childbirth. Luckily there are natural solutions which help many women overcome these attacks.

* Relax – your baby and your health come first. Take time out from your day and find somewhere peaceful to rest. Forget the stresses in your life and focus on thoughts you find soothing.

* Share your problem – pregnancy is not something you have to do alone. Talk about your feelings with your partner, family or friends. All new mothers feel anxious and scared at some point and you are not unusual in this. Remember too that there are many professional counselling and therapy services available for people exactly like you.

* Breathe deeply – you will be surprised by how effective focused breathing can be. Try lying down and breathing deeply. Breathe in through your nose; blow out through your mouth. Take your time and keep breathing deeply and slowly until you feel better.

It is very important that you seek help if you are having anxiety and panic attacks during your pregnancy. With the proper help, you will be able to control your levels of anxiety and stress. This is extremely important to yours and the health of your growing baby.

Also for women who are pregnant, their husbands may also be prone to anxiety and panic attacks. Becoming a new father can be very stressful and your husband or significant other may be extremely worried about supporting the new child and if the both of you can afford a new baby.

Men are notorious for not admitting when they are bothered about anything. And it is these un-admitted fears that can lead to anxiety and panic.

If you notice your husband or partner being more anxious or having panic attacks, try talking to him. This should be an enjoyable time for both of you, so help him to deal with his feelings or to get treatment if his attacks are out of control.

Family Fun Time – Nature Walk

Posted by Dr. Noel Swanson on June 10, 2008
by Dr. Noel Swanson

It seems sometimes that we can’t see the forest for the trees. Not because we aren’t looking, but because of deforestation. While the debate on environmental issues and global warming continues, you can enjoy family fun time by going on a nature walk.

The first thing is to choose clothes that are appropriate. Comfortable shoes, sneakers or hiking boots would be fine, as would light clothing in layers (depending upon the weather), and a slicker to carry just in case of rain. Bring binoculars as well because you never can tell what wonderful sights may await you and your family.

Much has been advertised and written about the importance of preserving nature and all living things. In fact, Jane Goodall has sponsored a program for children that allows them to create backyard habitats for all sorts of birds and other animals that need a place to visit or call home.

Teaching our children about nature and animals who inhabit our planet is not only a necessary exercise, but one from which children can learn all about specific habitats, the creatures who live in them, and the need to preserve them for their generation as well as the generation to come.

While most kids can learn about nature from textbooks, it is walking among the different trees and flowers, discovering different species of birds and insects that makes it real for them and easier to relate to and understand.

Whether you are taking your family to the zoo, or to a reserve where extinct birds can be found, now is the time to do it. Our earth’s natural resources are dissipating as the population continues to grow. While there are still parks which preserve the beauty of our land and its wildlife, no one knows how much longer conservation will continue.

Begin with a family nature walk, a fun time yet a time of learning and appreciating nature and the magnificent treasures it holds.
