Home School Select Summer Camp

Posted by Lonnie Lorenz on March 29, 2010

The summer camping experience can benefit greatly the Homeschooler. Regardless, of no age, grade level or religious background. Homeschool Summer Camps provide a place where children can be self-sufficient, and that’s a major part of growing up. Camp Councilors model perseverance, listening, teamwork and appreciation of differences. Whereby, helping children set new and standards for their own behavior, in turn brings their new found independence more in line with your at-home teachings.

There are many choices when choosing a summer camp, so how do you know you are picking the right camp for your homeschooler? Here are simple steps to assist parents sending their children to camp. Doing your work in advance will help ensure that your child has an enjoyable summer packed with wonderful memories and new experiences.

Summer Camp Benefits home schooled children by providing a wonderful opportunity to socialize with other children in a new and exciting environment. As a parent of a homechooler I realize often socialization is what’s missing in a home schooled child. Camp provides long-lasting friendships. Year after year campers return to see their old friends, making camp their summer home. Some children continue on past camper age and then participate as a Counselor in Training. Some even become counselors, passing on the traditions of summer camp.

Jeff Lorenz Owner of Swift Nature Camp an Children’s Summer Camp in Wisconsin says “Summer Camp provides children the chance to assume leadership roles within the cabin. Without parents or siblings around campers often show their true colors and excel in leading thus improving their confidence level”.

The many activities available at summer camp gives children the opportunities to try new things and discover new skills. From canoeing and Arts & Crafts to Swimming, Hiking and Horseback riding the list of activities available at different camps are of the utmost benefit to the children who attend.

Choosing the Best Summer Camp If your child has never been away from home and is under eight a local day camp might be the best choice. However, If your child feels comfortable with overnights away from home a residential camp is the way to go. Do not be afraid to challenge your child by giving him or her new opportunities, that’s what summer camp is all about. Home schooled children are a bit more attached to their family so gong to camp maybe a little harder sell to the child and the parents. So, both may need to work a little harder to get ready for a sleepaway camp experience. But, it will be well worth the effort.

There is comfort in the familiar so a traditional summer camp that provides opportunities in many different activity areas is a good choice. This gives a child comfort in some areas while giving them other activities that will challenge them to leave their zone of comfort.

If possible take your child to an open house. This allows parents and children to come and visit for a day and tour the grounds. For other camps this is not so easy, yet they might offer a local open house to meet staff and other campers. Work weekends at camp are a great way to get to know the staff and the grounds. This is a perfect venue to put a child’s fears at ease and make sure a camp is the right one. Don’t pick a camp just because all your child’s friends are attending. Camp is about making new friends in a new place.

References from past campers are wonderful tools in deciding if a camp is a good fit. These folks can even make your child feel more comfortable in their decision. Be sure to ask them about their feelings, activities and experiences. Older campers are very happy to share their family home with new campers and tell how camp has shaped their lives.

The American Camp Association accreditation is a vital step in choosing a summer camp. They have over 300 different areas which they look at to ensure a camp is safe both physically and mentally for children. Camps using their logo (ACA) are held to a set of standards far above other camps.

Lastly, and probably most important talk to the Camp Directors. In this age of internet websites its easy to make a decision with out ever had personal contact with the directors or owner. Parents often have strong intuition when making decisions that will affect their children and these should always be taken into account. Discuss any feelings and concerns with the camp staff. If parents are still uneasy after following all of these steps, the camp being considered is likely not the right one for their child.

Minnesota Summer Camps A Must

Posted by Lonnie Lorenz on March 28, 2010

Summer Camp in Minnesota has the pristine beauty of lakes, forests and Nature. But, to me, Swift Nature Camp , a Minnesota Summer Camp is a new family. A family that is unlike any I could ever imagine.

Why is it so much more? It is filled with encouragement, love, acceptance, and real friends that will be part of your camp memories for life. Your counselors are great people to look up to they act as parents, older siblings and more. You may even end up looking at them as siblings. Your Uniqueness is celebrated and Acceptance is everywhere. This is what makes Swift Nature Camp place that i can not wait to return to each summer.

When you’re not on canoe or backpack trips and just at camp, there is so much to do, you can never fit it all in. Other fun activities to do at camp are archery, swimming, fishing, boating, tubing, and riflery. I loved being active all day. What is real neat is rather you are a beginner or an expert in an area its ok. The counselors help you get better. All activities are noncompetitive and so we all support each other, rather than worry who is best.

When I think of Swift, I think of trips. I’ll never forget the Superior Hiking Trail or going to Ely. What an adventure! I loved the trails, nature, and sights of the forest. It was fun getting to know the other persons that hike with you. The wildlife you see is extremely cool. We saw hawks, bald eagles, deer, ospreys, trout, and carp. This is why I love Overnight Summer Camp in Minnesota.

Life in a cabin is about learning from others and with others. It is becoming a team of understanding. Sure, sometimes we had our fights or minor issues, but almost always they were resolved and we grew closer as a team for them.

I always loved the Nature Center. It is a great place to learn about Nature and the Environment. The Director is always fun and teaches us loads of cool things but its not at all like school. There are all sorts of animals that are fun to observe and hold. One day they even made me feel a little more comfortable when I was homesick.

Returning to Swift Nature Camp is like coming home. Maybe that’s why I love it so. It ’s the people, the nature and the independence that make it so special. So, I will see you next summer at this Minnesota Summer Camp.

For mom and dad who themselves put a large degree of significance on manner trends, pursuing fashion trends in children’s clothing appears a normal extension. Why Fruits Are Much Healthier Than Chocolates

Posted by Tina Brandeis on March 25, 2010

My boyfriend has just told me that he and his mother are going back to Weight Watchers, again! This is a regular thing that they do and have never stuck to it yet.

Although I had little faith in them I had to show my support, and said that I would get rid of all their cookie, candy and the like. Now I suffer from being underweight so a heap of it went home with me, and I still threw stacks away. No wonder they needed to go to Weight Watchers!

I really want them to succeed so offered to help them decide on what they were going to buy to have as snacks. I knew my boyfriend would be open to any suggestions but his mother is notoriously picky, but without any problems or arguments they both happily agreed to have fruit.

I personally love fruit, I think it’s great. They are extremely healthy and you can take them with you wherever you go. Let’s face it, that’s why most people eat junk food. They grab whatever is available, which is usually candy. But fruit can be just as handy.

A good tip to make sure that you eat plenty is to keep a bowl in a prominent place near a door so you will always see it on your way out and grab some.

I used to worry that the fruit would spoil, especially in the summer. To ensure we always had fruit handy, I had frozen fruits and juice in my freezer as well as plenty of dried fruits.

As there are so many varieties of fruit and different ways to eat it that there should never come a time when you are bored with it. Do as my boyfriend and his mother did, ditch the candy bars for fruits.

Getting out of the habit of eating candy will be tough at first but you will soon start to feel the difference in yourself that plenty of fresh fruit brings.

Besides nutrition, the writer also regularly writes about the rolling laundry room cart and garden cart wheels.

The Interesting Thing With Respect To Organic Meats

Posted by Ellen Rigsby on March 23, 2010

The most recent growth in the food industry had been in organic products. It’s definitely a giant step forward; however, the labels on organic meats are notoriously misleading.

The whole point of organic produce is that you are eating natural food as nature intended; no additives or pesticides and farmed by trainer farmers who know their stuff. You should be able to buy this and feed it to your loved ones with a completely clear conscience.

So if they can do such a good job with the fruit and vegetables, how come that the meat side of it is, shall we say, a grey area?

I would certainly have to think twice about paying extra for organic fish. Even though the USDA reckons that all wild fish is organic, what if that fish has chemicals such as mercury in its flesh?

There’s always someone banging on about battery hens and the way animal are treated etc, and these are the ones bound for the slaughterhouse. Surely we should know how the animals who provide organic meat are being housed and looked after.

Yes, we all grateful that the guidelines for their feed is so strict. It is very reassuring that we aren’t consuming their antibiotics, or hormones etc but I personally want to know about their living conditions.

If your only choice available is organic or non organic, go for the former every time. However, you will see an increasing number of other labels appearing from other organisations. The RSPCA will put its name to meat that it knows has been looked after well during its short life. A biodynamic meat is a step above organic too, so watch out for those too

There needs to be some radical changes to the organic meat industry, and sooner the better. The customer should know that what they read on the labels is the absolute truth. If there is any kind of misconception as to what organic actually stands for, we need to get our weight behind the reputable consumer pressure groups to force these changes through.

We’re always being told to drink more water, and we’re all sick of hearing it but the fact is its essential. This is natures own liquid, and we simply don’t drink enough of it. Take a bottle into work with you, and when you’ve drank it, fill in another 3 times during your working day.

Make sure that you eat at least one piece of fruit every day, in fact eat as much as you can.

Don’t get all melancholy and start bemoaning what you’ve missed out on, that’s gone now. What matters is how you will stop yourself from doing it in the future.

There is an old saying’ never put off until tomorrow what you can do today’, and after viewing your list you will see how sensible this saying is. Get out of this habit before it get any worse and start dealing with things when they arise, not when they have reached crisis point.

These things could be anything; running errands, doing chores, reading a book for school, in fact anything that you have put off for no other reason than you couldn’t be bothered. Get in there and do it, and don’t stop until it’s completely finished.

Now is the time to think about what you have achieved and how capable you are when you put your mind to it. The key now is to keep it up, and don’t fall back into your old ways.
