Looking after a young child and living with a teenager share many similarities. Both can have a sudden mood change with no explanation, both can be extremely messy, and both are concerned mainly with themselves.

The one obvious difference is that an infant is far cuter than a teenager, and easier to make happy. You can change the mood of the infant with something as simple as a hug, or a treat, both of which cost you barely anything and are easy to do.

When watching over a toddler, it is important that you make sure to “child-proof” the house. Be sure that the child is well protected from anything that might threaten his safety – harmful objects such as chemicals and medicines, sharp items like knives and scissors, breakable or fragile objects, and electrical devices should be beyond the child’s reach.

The same is true with items that are of value. Toddlers are naturally playful and curious and the danger of these things being broken or damaged is always a possibility, not to mention the injury they may cause.

Looking after a toddler is never an easy task and requires a lot of patience. Taking a toddler out for a walk, for example, means you need to be tolerant to satisfy the kid’s curiosity. Encourage him or her to observe things in public and to question why they are the way they are. This help in development and broaden his or her mind.

The toddler may get tired and need to sit in the stroller but will very often refuse to do so because walking and looking around is more interesting. This can be the source of many tantrums.

On the other hand, caring for toddlers can also be worthwhile and gratifying because they are tender and affectionate, and to be a part of their own little world is a privilege. It is so much like a renewal of your own childhood when you try to see things through the child’s eyes.

Your child will identify with you and feel a strong connection to you. In addition, there is nothing more rewarding than a big cuddle from your child who loves you.
