It has been said that information is power, so the more information someone has, the more powerful they can become. Considering this statement, it is important for parents to understand that their children need a good education so they can have an advantage in our society.

An education is more than going to school. It also involves reading, and it is a big responsibility for parents to develop a love and environment for reading in the kid. There are couple of steps that can help you achieve this, and the first one is to read to the child at an early age.

Many people have pleasant memories of their parent’s reading to them when they were younger, especially bedtime stories. Pass that along to your child, and keep books in their room so they get used to having them around.

Kids who are raised with books around will always have good feelings of familiarity towards them, and as they get older they will want to be near books. This will develop the need to have books within arm’s reach which will contribute to a love for reading. Constant encouragement is also important.

Parents are the strongest role models for kids, and what a great way to demonstrate good reading habits. Read a variety of things from the newspaper to novels so they can see your love for reading and want to imitate that. By being a good example, you will be inspiring them to develop good reading habits.

Make sure that the books nearby your kids are on topics that they are interested in, and continually remind them that good reading habits will expand their world.

Once you have determined they have started to embrace reading, now is the time to let them get their own books. Having them pick their own titles will make reading more fun.

Not only will this give them a sense of ownership in picking titles themselves, but they will want to get their hands on as many books as possible. This will help them to keep learning more and more as they read on.
