Growing up is something that, if we’re being honest, starts at conception. In almost no time at all a baby goes from a ball of rapidly dividing cells to the beginnings of a human being with rudimentary lungs, a brain and a pumping heart. There are only forty weeks from conception to independent life. Even after birth the changes happen quickly-personalities and decision making seem to happen almost at once. The sheer coordination needed for your eyes to function correctly will astound you. Babies usually have working eyes by the end of the first trimester or very beginning of the second trimester. Even as early as six months after conception your baby will show signs of light sensitivity. Here’s something else about your baby’s eyes: if he is Caucasian he will be born with blue eyes but they might not stay that color! Caucasian babies do not usually keep their “original” eye color (blue). So don’t let yourself get too attached to the blue color. They might not stay that way! Most people already accept that babies are able to hear sounds even before they are born. Many sounds cause babies to have strong reactions-reactions that have been recorded before the baby is born. Did you know, though, that decibel levels are just as important while the baby is in the womb as it is once the baby is born? A fetus’s ears are impressionable and sensitive. Your doctor will probably tell you that a good gauge for what is too loud is your vacuum cleaner: if your television or music is louder than the vacuum then that music or television show needs its volume turned down! If you must listen to loud music, wear headphones as this will cut down on the noise inflicted on your baby considerably-some doctors even think that vacuum cleaners are too loud so keep the noise to a dull roar as much as you can

Did you know that some babies are born with teeth? Other babies don’t start getting their teeth in until well after their first birthdays.Most parents dread the teething process. There is no reason to fret if your child starts teething earlier or later than his peers. Babies grow at different rates and even if you have other kids who started to get their teeth in at a specific age that is not a guarantee that this baby will follow suit.

Most people believe that babies do not know how to smile before they are born. If a baby does smile before a certain point, most people think it is gas. Even experts thought that it was the parents that taught a baby to smile when it was happy, that the baby did not know how to express happiness right away. Disapproval and unhappiness were thought to be easier for a baby to express than happiness. Now we know better. Smiling has been picked up by newer ultrasound machines, proving the old theories are wrong. Many doctors are now able to print out pictures for families that show the new baby smiling before he or she is born. Doctors now think that babies seem to “learn” how to smile because it takes them a few weeks to get over the trauma of having been birthed.

Babies have a harder time communicating verbally and often resort to physical communication until they learn how to talk. Many parents use this as a basis for beginning the “baby signs” program with their kids. Signing programs teach babies how to use physical actions for things like hunger, thirst, tiredness, needing a diaper change, etc which helps them communicate better with their parents. Some research has even shown that babies who learn to communicate with the baby signs program (before they learn to talk) go on to have stronger communication skills that people who were not taught physical forms of communication at an early age. Babies are really fun to learn about. We have yet to figure out just how quickly babies learn and by what process they retain those things. There is, however, a universal consensus on just how wonderful it is to watch babies grow up: they change every single day!
