It is really hard to get a control on your finances when you are a full-time student living on part-time work, but to survive in this world, one has to stand up to the ordeal.
As students will soon find out, a large part of their monthly expenses will go into paying for rent. But before they even start paying for rent, students should determine the amount of rent they can afford.
When determining their rental budget, all other expenses must be taken into account as well. After all, students will not be spending on rent alone.
Other expenses include the following: groceries, clothing and laundry expenses, landline and cellular phone bills, cable and internet connections, other household expenses, and car maintenance (i.e. accident insurance, registration, licenses and even fees for parking).
Then there are expenses related to repair when things break down such as their computer or their vehicle. They even have to set aside a budget for dealing with illnesses as even the common cold can take a bite out of anyone’s budget.
The general budgeting rule when it comes to rental fees is that it should not be more than 25% of their total monthly expenses. So for example, if a student gets $2,500/month from work and/or grants, then a $625 monthly budget for rent is acceptable. They have to make sure this covers utility bills as well, though.
Another thing that a student would be wise to plan ahead for is the lease period. Knowing if they are going to be staying over the summer or not can mean a savings of two or three months worth of rent.
Knowing what their overall expenses are going to be and planning ahead can definitely be a huge jump start for the young adult. Although expenses cannot be totally predicted, sticking to a budget and being aware of their spending constraints can spell the difference between success and failure.
