The name varies between countries and sometimes even between provinces or states. What makes these schools different to public schools is that the government does not fund them.

Most independent/private schools extend invitations to high achieving children at government schools to apply for scholarships. Applicants are required to sit an exam and, if successful, they are awarded a scholarship for the remainder, or part, of their education free of charge.

The reason for this is to give a select number of public school children the opportunity to be educated in the unique environment of a private school. Scholarships are offered in various categories, for instance academic, the arts, or sports. A private school offers them for two reasons – first, to enable the child to receive a superior standard of education and, second, the school awarding the scholarship is gaining a high achiever which boosts its public image.

While numerous public schools are excellent, there are certainly some significant benefits associated with a private school. The most noteworthy of all is the pupil to teacher ratio. Because classes are small, every child is able to receive individual attention from his or her teacher. In addition, independent schools strive to develop and nurture a child’s natural abilities.

Also, a private or independent school can afford to implement sophisticated teaching programs. Teachers at these schools are not paid a graded salary like their peers in government funded schools. They are paid in accordance with their abilities, qualifications, and experience – like the corporate sector. Therefore, children can benefit from a high caliber of teaching.

At an independent school, the relationship between the parent and teacher is a lot closer. Parents are considered to be a vital component of every child’s learning experience. Those who are in a financial position to afford fees for an independent school are certainly making a good investment in their child’s future. As mentioned before, this is not implying that government schools do not produce exceptional students who go on to achieve great success in life.

A preparatory school is also called a prep school, or a primary school. Again, the terminology and description varies in countries. In the USA, for example, a prep school is an independent, or private, secondary or high school. In contrast, other countries including the UK, a preparatory school is one that prepares pre-adolescent children for high school. The age-group in this case is 8 to 12 year-olds.

Another education decision that faces parents all around the world is whether to enroll their children at a co-educational school or a single-sex school. Long-term studies on this debate have been conducted globally. The results show that children educated in a single-sex school achieve more and learn better. An Australian study, that involved 270,000 children of both sexes, also established that girls and boys achieved higher results at single-sex schools.
