Detecting 3 core behaviours that increase stress for you and your family

Posted by London Plimmer on June 19, 2011

Family members often know exactly how to cause you stress and anxiety. Three obsessive behaviours that you, your spouse and your children might be doing cause anxiety can be easily identified and remedied so you can enjoy a stress-free family life. Sometimes your anxiety and stress can go beyond what can be remedied by an activity like catfishing or playing golf (or any other activity you find relaxing).

The first is obsessive negativity. Obsessive negativity means that you have a tendency toward being “negative” about places, people and situations in your life. Teenagers can wallow in this behavior and it can lead to depression.

You might say things such as “I can’t do this!” or “No one understands!” or “Nothing ever works!”. It may be unconsciously, but essentially it’s what’s known as a “sour grapes” attitude, and it, if allowed to continues, can become ingrained! The world looks different with happiness and positive thinking.

Obsessive perfectionism is the second challenge, and can be a deep source of anxiety, especially if you are the one forcing high standards on your teenager. Ensure you give praise and constructive criticism, not destructive criticism. When you engage in obsessive perfectionism, you are centered on trying to do everything “just so” to the point of driving yourself into an anxious state of being. Internal statements such as, “I have to do this right, or I’ll be a failure!” or “If I am not precise, people will be mad at me!” set a person up for failure. This behavior might be totally under the threshold of your awareness, but it interferes greatly with the ability to enjoy things without feeling stress.

Finally there is obsessive analysis. When you are obsessed about analyzing things you find yourself rolling lists, instructions or processes around in your head, over and over. For instance, you might find yourself making statements such as, “I need to know this like the back of my hand or things might go wrong” or “If I don’t have a handle on this, something’s bound to go wrong”.

Child and teenage brains need to have rest as well as stimulation. If you notice your child over-analysing or micro-analysing a situation, and always wanting control, this is not good for them. They need to be made to feel safe, and that it’s OK to relax.

What can you do to help relieve stress? Identifying these blocking behaviours in your life, or the life of your kids, starts the process to recovery. Before you engage a clinical consultant first, get some feedback from your friends about you or your children.

The truth may hurt, so be prepared for this. You will gain valuable insights into your personality, and your friends and family may be extremely supportive of your efforts to change and improve your life. If it’s for your children you have to not look at the criticism as a direct attack on your parenting skills.

Secondly, keep a diary to write down and establish patterns of when blocking behaviors are used. Even if you are not thrilled with the idea of writing, you can make little entries into a note book or journal each day. The great part is that you’ll begin to see patterns in behavior that reveal exactly what is happening to foster anxiety.

Other activities that can reduce stress for your children includes playing driving games and watching classic muscle car racing – whatever distracts them from your current situation is good.

For dyslexics, the white background behind words can have this effect on their eyes the entire precious time. Since each colour has its own wavelength, colour filters can slow down the wavelength of light which can have the effect of calming down the text giving the black text a raised effect thereby making it more likely to read.

Somehow children seem to be wired to misbehave whenever their parents want them to behave their best. Nothing is more embarrassing or stressful as having to deal with bad behavior in front of friends and family.

There are ways to have happy stress free visits. Here’s a good start with these 8 strategies.

1. If you can you choose the time of your visit. Tired, hungry or over stimulated children are rarely on their best behavior. If you can’t choose the time try and change the child’s routine so that they are relaxed and not hungry, tired or over excited.

2. Explain to the children before hand where you are going, who you will be seeing and how long you might be there. If it’s not a visit they are looking forward to have something to offer at the end they can look forward to. The promise of a stop at a favorite playground or ice cream parlor can work wonders.

3. If the visit involves a meal and you have a fussy eater. Take the pressure off by taking some suitable food you know they will happily eat. Save your host from being offended by telling them before hand that you will be bringing your child’s food.

4. When you know you are visiting a house which is not “child friendly”, take toys, books, a DVD or other suitable activities your child can enjoy. Bored children are much more likely to misbehave.

5. Let your child be important and involved. If you’re taking a gift get your child to present it to the host. It’s also a nice idea to get children to make a special drawing or card to give Encourage children to interact and speak with the host. Make them say hello when they arrive and goodbye and thank you when you leave.

6. It a good idea to always stay close to your children. Constantly keep an eye on where they are and what they are doing. Take turns so an adult is always watching them. It works well to join in and play with them from time to time. Take them outside for a game to release some energy and stave off boredom.

7. If there are children at the house you are visiting still keep an eye on how they are all getting along. Get involved and interact with the group. You need to make sure your children are happy and that they are all getting along together happily, playing and sharing.

8. Keep your eye on the time. When the children are tiring of the visit it’s time to leave. Even if you are enjoying it your child’s behavior will deteriorate once they’ve had enough.

Travel Tips for Taking Your Children

Posted by John B Ambrose on June 15, 2011

Traveling can be stressful for all of us, even the seasoned globetrotter, however when you are taking your children you need to pay extra attention. Children do get bored easily and need to be occupied, plus there are logistical issues associated with taking a trip with your child.

Be prepared and use these handy hints for a stress-free journey with your children.

Car Travel

Long car journeys can be very tiring and monotonous, though as the driver you are engaged in driving safely and frequently at high speeds. In the meanwhile, the children are in the back seat and trying their best not to fidget or vent their frustrations out on you and everyone else…if you are fortunate enough to have well-behaved kids!
The first thing to appreciate is you will not be able to beat all-comer records, because you will need to stop regularly so they can take a break. Factor extra rest breaks into your journey planning and make sure there are restroom facilities available so there are no accidents.

Take plenty of toys and play activities for the kids to enjoy, especially those which are suitable for use in the car. One excellent tip is to make sure there are no toys which make a noise, unless you equip the child with headphones, say to watch a movie on the laptop.

Makes sure you have a cooler with plenty of drinks and snacks. Go for dry foods which do not make a sloppy mess – crumbs and wafers can be easily cleaned up, but a fruit cup will get all over the child and your car. If you have one, bring a small, battery operated vacuum cleaner to keep the vehicle clean and more comfortable for everyone.
Always have an emergency medical kit in the vehicle, and with children you should ensure you have appropriate child medications for headaches or travel sickness.

Children and Air Travel

Airports are usually busy, hectic and crowded places and for a child, this can be a scary experience, especially when you factor in a flight. You should orientate your child on what to expect, for instance with airport security searches and inspections.

Always factor in additional time to get to the airport and through check-in and security when you have children. Ensure your child pays a visit to the restroom before you start check-in, and again before you commence security checks and yet again before you board the aircraft.

A good tip is to make your child feel special and engaged in what is going; you can do this by making them their very own carry on bag. Pack it with favorite toys, coloring books, pencils and other activities. Do not pack it with fluids as these are likely to attract the attention of security and in any event, you do not want your kids to get messy on the plane.

No matter what form of transport you are taking, always pack wet wipes and paper towels! You can use the wet wipes to clean up any mess, but they are also useful for refreshing tired kids who will all too quickly be asking, “Are we there yet?”

Revealed 8 Ways To End Toddler Shopping Tantrums

Posted by Sandi Brown on June 14, 2011

Shopping and toddlers having a tantrum seem to go together more often than not. If you are a parent who dreads taking your toddler shopping you are not alone. I’m going to change all that by giving you some useful tips that will let you enjoy tantrum free shopping trips.

1. Don’t tempt fate by waking up a toddler just to get your shopping done. See that the toddler isn’t hungry, tired or unwell. If they are the trip will much more likely end in a tantrum.

2. Choose to shop on the least busy days. All shops and malls have busy times and days. If you avoid the busy times you will find parking less stressful and there will be less waiting time in queues.

3. Write yourself a shopping list. When you know what you want to buy it shortens the shopping time and you don’t have to concentrate on trying to think what you need. If you know your supermarket well, you can even have your shopping list in the same order as the aisles you will go around. You’ll enjoy the added bonus of spending less too.

4. Think of ways to include and involve your toddler. Give them items to hold. Let them look for things and if they are big enough get them to take them off the shelf for you.

5. The more you interact with them the happier they will be. Talk and ask lots of questions. Have some fun. Laugh, play touch and hug them. Look for and talk about colors, sizes and shapes. Not only will you be teaching them some important concepts but they will be having some fun at the same time.

6. If you have a very active toddler that hates being confined take another adult with you. Grandmas are great for this. They can take the toddler for a walk and give them some special attention which all little ones love.

7. Don’t start the bad habit of letting toddlers eat in shops. Once you start it becomes a toddler tantrum zone when they see something they want. If you do buy them anything teach them they can’t open it in the shop but have to hold it and give it to the checkout operator. They enjoy the feeling of anticipation and feeling “grown up”. Learning to wait is a valuable lesson for them to learn.

8. At the end of shopping, packing the car is another potential tantrum time too. If you don’t have someone with you that can entertain the toddler, it’s a good time to settle them into their car seat and open a healthy snack or drink. Or have books or toys in the car you keep especially for shopping times.

You can quickly learn how to end the problem of toddler tantrums forever. If you are ready to discover some more easy parenting techniques, that will let you enjoy a tantrum free life, starting today. Click here

Lowering Your Periodic Bill For Health Insurance By Choosing A High Deductible Plan

Posted by Barbara J. Walters on June 12, 2011

Now more than ever before the types of health insurance plans have increased in number and the various ones available are tailored to suit different needs. Now it just follows that all you must do is to find a health insurance plan to suit your needs and one which is affordable.

In case you need to see a more reduced monthly health insurance bill, the idea is to find the one that has a high deductible plan. It will reduce the cost of what is required monthly payment even though at the end of the day the amount would increase on what you pay as a claim. Here is the way it works to your advantage.

Going by the name you might have already guessed that a high deductible health plan is that which has high deductible. The deductible meaning the money you must pay out of your pocket for a health insurance claim.

Take for example a deductible of $1,000 with a claim for medical bills which would not come to you until you have coughed up to $1,000. Higher deductible therefore will attract lower monthly payments but at the point of using it you will realize that it is cheaper. You must exercise a risk and rewards outlook.

If possible, it is always recommended that you deposit your deductible away in a savings account where it can be reached easily in case of urgent need. That is the best way to take advantage of the high deductible health plan, instead of facing a risk.

Then of course if you find that it is not very easy to save that amount, the best thing is to use your insurance as rarely as possible. Which means you would not be required to keep covering the cost of your deductible anyway and it would be the most logical move in your situation.

You would minimize the amount needed to be paid on your high deductible plan if you can bundle it together with your other insurance pans like auto and home owners policies instead of doing each separately.

Lowering the limits of your policy will also make you pay less monthly.

Besides family health, the author additionally frequently writes on high deductible health plan and health insurance premium.

The Advantages Of Obtaining Health Insurance

Posted by Zac Mahoney on June 10, 2011

No one enjoys perfect health. And at times when people are sick, it is natural for them to want to be cared for. When on e is sick, one is overwhelmed by a feeling of helplessness. These times the patients call for some kind of help from people around them.

It is to cater for times like this that different health insurance companies have come up with different policies. These policies take care of the medical bills and the cost incurred by a patient during the period of their indisposition.

All the policy holders pay a monthly amount which goes towards payment of their medical expenses in the case the policy holder falls ill. The amount is determined by the nature of the policy the person is holding. In most cases, a major portion of the fees is reimbursed.

It is a company policy to provide such schemes to their employees as they seem fit. It is considered a waste to throw away a portion of the salary on an unseemly possibility of falling sick. So the person must be convinced of the need for a policy. Normally, individuals, who are self employed, are more reluctant to put up the fees out of their own pockets

While it is easy for an employee to get an insurance cover from their place of work, the family is left high and dry. It is this aspect that has lead to many companies to offer separate packages for members of the family. Many family members have to opt for a agent different from that of the head of the family.

As there are different policies, one must make sure all the members of the family are adequately covered. This is a duty of the head of the family and he must also make sure that there are enough provisions for all kinds of likely eventualities.

In addition to health and finance, this writer also frequently writes regarding GHI health insurance and Atlantis health insurance.
